Deep brain stimulation needs more regulation, concludes a new report by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.1
Among a number of recommendations, the report advocates that the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency assesses not only the safety and performance of the stimulation device but also the overall effectiveness of deep brain stimulation in the treatment of diseases.
It also calls for independent counselling for all patients before consent and a publicly accessible register of clinical experiences and outcomes.
