After graduating Matthew Walter John Boyd enlisted in the army and joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. He served in India, Burma, and French Indochina, finally returning to civilian practice in 1947.

On his return, Walter continued his career, first as a junior trainee at the Belfast City Hospital and then in registrar posts at the Royal Victoria and Belfast City Hospitals.

Early in his career, he developed an interest in joint diseases, and rheumatology became his specialty. As a sympathetic and caring physician, he always welcomed students at his ward rounds which were well …
