A prototype system of direct consumer reporting of patient safety events will be evaluated next summer, according to plans by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
Most existing reporting systems do not include or solicit reports from patients and their families. AHRQ believes that “the unique perspective of healthcare consumers could reveal important information that is not reported by healthcare providers,” it says in the Federal Register.1
