Alan Harwood Roscoe spent his childhood in Middleton, north Manchester. In 1943, aged 17, he joined the Royal Air Force, serving as a navigator on the de Havilland Mosquito aircraft for the last years of the second world war, after which he was involved in aerial reconnaissance over Germany.
