BMA consults GMC about cash incentives to GPs to cut patient care

Doctors’ leaders have approached the General Medical Council to see whether it would be prepared to bring pressure to bear on GPs who continue to pare back elements of patient care in return for financial reward.

Some of the outgoing primary care trusts had set targets for GPs to cut back on expensive items, such as some referrals or prescribing, and had rewarded doctors who reached them, in a bid to reduce spending.
