Lawrence Goldie, who has died aged 88, was a psychiatrist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist. He advocated an approach to medical care based on principles of “complementarity” and brought psychoanalytic principles to the treatment of cancer patients. His book Psychotherapy and the Treatment of Cancer Patients: Bearing Cancer in Mind has become a widely used teaching text at home and abroad.1
