The “silver tsunami” of US baby boomers that is now entering retirement threatens to swamp the healthcare system, particularly mental health and substance misuse services, says a new report from the US Institute of Medicine, released on 10 July.1
The tidal wave comes from the convergence of two factors: the size of the cohort and its intense use of mental health services.
The US Census Bureau predicts that the number of persons aged over 65 will rise from 40.3 million in 2010 to 72.1 million in 2030.
