Lack of equality when it comes to diverse cultural backgrounds makes people angry, and yet the exclusion from public life of the poorest in society is often dismissed as a problem of social mobility. I know something of social mobility. My parents came from privileged backgrounds but suffered the social cataclysms of bankruptcy and divorce in the late 1960s. Consequently, I was comprehensively educated, and I received free school dinners and clothing vouchers. To add to the mix we moved to Orkney, as minority English settlers.
