The BMA’s General Practitioners Committee has published revised guidance to help guide GPs through registration with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The GPC launched a CQC toolkit in 2011 amid concerns about the burdensome nature of the registration process. Since then registration has been delayed by a year to April 2013, and changes have been made to the process itself.

The updated guidance outlines the key terms and dates in general practice registration and examples of how practices could demonstrate their compliance with the CQC’s 16 essential standards of quality and safety.

The GPC believes that most practices could fulfil the essential standards through their current contractual commitments outlined in the general medical services contract but has provided the guidance to help GPs fulfil their legal requirement to register with the regulator.
