Re: Mortality and implant revision rates of hip arthroplasty in patients with osteoarthritis: registry based cohort study

The most recent corrections issued by McMinn et al. to their analysis of mortality and implant revision rates published in the BMJ on 14th June 2012 require further clarification.
The dataset for this analysis was released on 15th August 2011 by the National Joint Registry (NJR) to Smith and Nephew. The NJR was not made aware that the data were to be passed on by the company to the paper’s authors for an analysis of mortality. The information on mortality in the dataset we provided was incomplete, with no times to death given for patients who underwent revision procedures.
We wish to emphasise that the dataset released by the NJR was not linked to HES or PEDW. No data were included that would allow linkage to HES or PEDW from another source. The NJR is not authorised to release HES or PEDW linked data to a third party.
