Arthur John Whitworth (always known as John) was educated at Rugby School, where he developed an early interest in engineering, making, among other things, a clock for his school. When it came to choosing a career he pursued his interest in medicine but never lost his interest in mechanical devices.
He attended St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and completed his clinical training at the London Hospital. After a year as an “assistant without a view” he entered general practice in Totton, Hampshire, where he spent the whole of his professional …
