Researchers found that mild to moderate acute GVHD was associated with a reduced risk of disease progression and improved survival, compared with no acute GVHD. But extensive chronic GVHD was associated with increased treatment related mortality, compared with no chronic GVHD (Blood 2012;119:2141-8, doi:10.1182/blood-2011-07-368233).
Visiting an emergency department can be risky, especially for old and vulnerable people. In a cohort study of 1269 older residents of a long term care facility, a visit to the emergency department during the study period was associated with a threefold increased risk of infection (CMAJ 2012;184:e232-9, doi:10.1503/cmaj.110372). The incidence of new infections was 8.3 per 1000 patient days in those who had been to hospital compared with 3.4 per 1000 patient days in those who had not.
