In this news story by Clare Dyer published on line on 27 February (BMJ 2012;344:e1452; doi:10.1136/bmj.e1452), we failed to make it clear that the new volume of ethics guidance produced by the BMA gave exactly the same guidance on abortion for sex selection as it gave in the previous volume of guidance published in 2003. The guidance aimed to explain to doctors the law regarding abortion and the grounds for abortion as laid out in the Abortion Act 1967.

We apologise if our story caused confusion.
