Jean Alison Renwick Boldy was born in Edinburgh and educated at George Watson’s Ladies College and Edinburgh University, both institutions that she continued to support throughout her life. She started studying maths and physics but switched to medicine, not without some resistance from some who thought this an “unladylike” occupation. She graduated in 1948, the year that the NHS was established, and moved down south to work in the Lister Hospital, which in those days was located in Hitchin.
