Bryan John Hockey was born on 10 August 1926 in Radstock, Somerset. He obtained a scholarship to Selwyn College, Cambridge, to study medicine. He achieved a first in natural sciences and then did his clinical studies at University College Hospital, London, qualifying in 1949.
