Catherine Margaret Hall began her career in medicine at St Andrews University Medical School in 1982, obtaining a BSc in medical science in 1985. She completed her clinical training at the University of Manchester Medical School, graduating with honours in 1988, after receiving a number of prizes in medicine, community medicine, and general practice, and a scholarship for her elective. During her time at university, Catherine was also a keen debater and qualified for the final of the university world debating championships.
