Global Fund tries to lessen impact of corruption cases with reiteration of zero tolerance

The chief of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has reiterated that it will not tolerate corruption, after media reports speculating that billions of dollars may have disappeared from its programmes.

Michel Kazatchkine, the fund’s executive director, said, “The Global Fund has zero tolerance for corruption and actively seeks to uncover any evidence of misuse of its funds. It deploys some of the most rigorous procedures to detect fraud and fight corruption of any organisation financing development.”

A report published by the fund in October found cases of fraud and abuse of grants by some ministries of health, national bodies, and civil society organisations in Djibouti, Mali, Mauritania, Zambia, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Haiti, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea.
