Christopher John Goodwill came from a medical family, including his mother, who qualified from King’s College Hospital in 1926 and from whom he learnt much medicine.

After house jobs in London, he was in the army for his national service, mostly as a medical officer with the Grenadier Guards. Returning to civilian life in 1960, when most national service was ending, he worked at the Brook Hospital, Woolwich—excellent training for the MRCP.
