The prime minister’s official spokesman has issued a “guarantee” to safeguard the welfare of 31 000 residents of care homes run by Southern Cross, the biggest private residential and nursing home chain, which is struggling to avoid collapse.
Number 10’s intervention came as controversy over social care fuelled the already heated debate over the government’s planned NHS reforms.
