Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed. Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles. The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being wilfully misrepresented as published articles.
In Plymouth, an average city in the UK, we have three types of
secondary school. A private college for the very well off, grammar schools
for the children of parents who want their childen to have a better
education than the rest, and comprehensives, who take the remaining mixed
bag of youngsters.
Thus, from the age of 11, indeed before, we are building educational
inequality (the dark companion of the pursuit of excellence) which will
lead to social and thence to health inequalities.
Trying to decrease health inequalities without trying to address the
fundamental causes will no doubt lead to the publication of many, many
more studies, the holding of many many more seminars and conferences, all
of which seem less than keen to look at the issues in this country which
lie at the heart of our inbuilt, policy driven,currently insoluable
