All rapid responses
Given that the Commission found that the "triad" used to diagnose
"shaken baby" was "founded on a small database taken from poor quality
research". Will the BMJ now withdraw the Editorial piece written by Brian
Harding, Henry Krous and Brian Harding published on the 24th of March 2004
( extract below) in which they explain why the triad is diagnostic of
shaken baby, now known as "rotational acceleration deceleration injury"?
And in fact remove from publication any paper, letter etc that refers to
the "triad" as being diagnostic of shaken baby syndrome?
"In shaken baby syndrome, it is the combined triad of subdural and
retinal haemorrhage with brain damage, as well as the characteristics of
each of these components that allow a reconstruction of the mechanism of
injury, and assessment of the degree of force employed. The application of
rotational acceleration and deceleration forces to the infant's head
causes the brain to rotate in the skull. Abrupt deceleration allows
continuing brain rotation until bridging veins are stretched and ruptured,
causing a thin layer of subdural haemorrhage on the surface of the brain.
This is not a space occupying lesion; its importance is in indicating the
mechanism of injury. The retinal haemorrhages, which are
characteristically extensive, occupy much of the circumference of the
globe and extend through all the layers of the retina and similarly result
from rotational acceleration and deceleration forces."
It is the flooding of a theory into medical literature that allows
that hypothesis to become embedded as a scientific fact in the minds of
doctors, lawyers and judges alike. The scientific basis of the "triad" has
been built on a castle of sand.
Competing interests: I am currently involved in researching and advising, unremunerated, a number of legal teams involved in defending alleged shaken baby cases.I run a blog where I seek to expose what has been going on in cases of alleged shaken baby.
