Born in Oldham to Scots parents, John Fyfe spent most of his life in Scotland, attending Dollar Academy after being evacuated during the war. He captained the school cricket side, played for the rugby team, and was elected head boy. John was selected for the Scottish Schools but was denied the opportunity of actually playing owing to a cartilage injury. While at Glasgow University he was selected to play cricket for Scottish universities against English universities.
