Theodore Inslee Jones (“Ted”) made his first visit to Scotland in 1941 as a pilot in 422 Night Fighter Squadron of the US Army Air Force. He returned to the United States to qualify in medicine at Cornell University and then to become a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, with appointments as an associate professor at the Medical School in Rochester, New York, and visiting surgeon at two teaching hospitals, and a private practice. He married Ann Kramer and had five children, four boys and a girl, and now four grandchildren.

Their vigorous and prosperous life style in New York State included sailing and rural pursuits. It was surprising when, from this enviable base and with Ann’s agreement, Ted decided to fulfil an earlier ambition dating from his wartime experience in Scotland to seek a simpler, more natural life as a general practitioner in a friendly community with his boat moored near by and a cottage hospital to maintain his link with surgery. So, in 1973, he set sail with three companions in his 35 foot yawl ARIES (a milestone in longitude) and crossed the Atlantic from Long Island to Falmouth in 33 days.
