In giving the background to this latest news about Nello Martini, former head of the Italian drug regulatory agency, the Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco (BMJ 2010;341:c3747, doi:10.1136/bmj.c3747), we said that a few days after the sacking of Martini in July 2008, it was announced that the agency’s responsibilities would be curtailed and that several functions, including drug pricing, would be reassigned to the health and welfare ministry. That announcement was indeed made, but we should have added that despite the announcement, drug pricing since then has in fact remained among the responsibilities of the agency.
