Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed. Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles. The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being wilfully misrepresented as published articles.
The reverse problem is surely subsidies. Anyway, we've been bribed
enough already to think that volume means value, and so the "value meal"
is a bargain*, with "large fries and large drink". Once you've got it -
you eat it! The wonderful "flavor enhancers" make sure of that, and leave
us hungry for more carbs. *If we were to buy the same meal with small
fries and drink, we'd pay more.
It is not just sugar that's the problem. The vegetable-oil-ization
of prepared food is as bad if not worse. The primary ingredients are
often vegetable oil and sugar. So we've become so habituated to sweet,
fatty ("mouth feel"), and flavor-enhanced food and drink that we get a
morbid appetite and can't shovel it in fast enough. How did we fatten
farm animals - didn't we feed them with soybeans and corn? And probably
skimmed milk (before it became fashionable for human consumption)? And if
we consume the same, should we expect a different outcome?
On average, Americans consume 700 kcal a day more than they did in
1950. And that takes a lot of exercise to lose it. Just leave it on the
supermarket shelf. If you don't buy it, who's going to eat it?
