Rory Nicol served as senior lecturer and consultant child psychiatrist at Newcastle University before establishing an entirely new service, the child and family psychiatry service, for Leicestershire Health Authority. He served as clinical director, one of the first psychiatry directorships in the country.
He played a major part in a number of clinical innovations, including the development of family therapy techniques and training. Author of numerous books and papers, he served as chairman of the Child Psychiatry Section of the Royal College of Psychiatrists during 1990-4. He also came to play an influential part in Russian child psychiatry.
He leaves a wife, Frances; two children; and two grandchildren.
