Child development and Suicide in Schizophrenia
It is well known that in deaths due to unnatural causes, mainly
suicide ,is high in schizophrenia with rates of about 10% as compared to
the 1% in the general population. It was indeed very interesting to see
that this article highlighted the reduced incidences of suicide in
psychotic patients with low IQ but of course there remians the question as
to what the possible association is.
I thought I would impress upon people various studies that have gone
into CHILD DEVELOPMENT as an aetiology for psychosis inclduing impact of
low IQ
Parnas et al studied 207 children of schizophrenic mother with
interviews done at 8-12 and then at 18.measures predicting schizophrenia
included poor rapport, isolation from peers, school disciplinary problems
and passive nature of children since they were babies.
More recently Done et al did a propective study of 16000 children
over a 16-year period and found that those with schizophrenia could
possibly be caught early with features including greater hostility toward
parents and speech and language difficulties.
Severeal other studies have gone on to show the overall impact of
increased rates of intellectual dysfunction and poor social competence in
the developmet of schizophrenia.
