Rapid responses are electronic letters to the editor. They enable our users to debate issues raised in articles published on thebmj.com. Although a selection of rapid responses will be included online and in print as readers' letters, their first appearance online means that they are published articles. If you need the url (web address) of an individual response, perhaps for citation purposes, simply click on the response headline and copy the url from the browser window. Letters are indexed in PubMed.
This letter describes the real world. The previous letter in the
paper issue of BMJ re mental capacity describes an ideal one or certainly
one where all the forms are filled in. It needs to be read in conjunction
with this week's TV documentary describing 30% profit for residential care
home owners. It does so well to illustrate the real problems. Certainly
in my area nearly all anti psychotics will have been started on the advice
of a consultant. I cannot see how on earth bringing mental capactiy
assesments into it will improve care. It will just end up with more 999
ambulances being called by homes whose staff with the best will in the
world cannot cope with the resources they have.
