    A native of Edinburgh, Dorothy Lindsay Smith (née Grieve) was educated at George Watson’s Ladies College, where she became head girl.

    At Edinburgh University she won the Mackenzie bursary for anatomy, the Royal Victoria Trust gold medal for tuberculosis, and Dorothy Gilfillan prize for most distinguished woman graduate of the year in 1954. She won three blues at rowing.
