    Peter Leslie Masters was born in London on 17 January 1920. He studied medicine at Guy’s Hospital, where he qualified in 1942. After house jobs in 1943, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1944 to 1946 in India, Burma, Malaya, and Singapore. He was mentioned in dispatches and retired from the army with the rank of captain. After the second world war he obtained the DCH in 1949 and the London MD (pathology) in 1951.
