Staff shortages persist at troubled Mid Staffordshire trust

    Shortages of surgeons and nurses are still a problem at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, despite a highly critical report into care there that insisted staffing levels be increased.

    Two government reports published this week show that although there have been improvements at the trust, much more needs to be done.

    The trust was heavily criticised for severe failings in a report published by the former regulator, the Healthcare Commission, in March, which, after studying the trust’s performance between 2005 and 2008, said that emergency care there was unsafe because of a lack of staff and equipment (BMJ 2009;338:b1141, doi:10.1136/bmj.b1141).
