    Brian Higgs was born and raised in Bedford and joined Bedford College in 1943. He went up to Caius College, Cambridge, in 1953 to study medicine. In 1957 he went on to Westminster Medical College, where he won the Hanbury prize, the Chadwick clinical surgery prize, the Abraham prize for clinical pathology, and the Arthur Evans memorial prize.
