Charity sets up fund to defend researcher being sued for libel

    The registered charity HealthWatch has set up a fund to support Peter Wilmshurst, a consultant cardiologist who is facing a libel action in the High Court in London over comments he made to a US based medical website about a trial in which he was the joint principal investigator (BMJ 2008;337:a2412, 3 Nov, doi:10.1136/bmj.a2412).

    The fund has been launched with a donation of £5000 (€5900; $7440) from John Garrow, a past chairman of HealthWatch and former professor of nutrition at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.
