The only daughter in a medical family, Anna Cecilia McKee (“Nan”) had hoped to follow her male friends and family (including her future husband) into the armed forces when she qualified in 1941. As her parents made it clear that this was not considered appropriate for a young woman, she spent the remainder of the war in hospitals in Manchester and Birmingham.
