Joan Davies was born in Llanelli, but after house appointments in Cardiff she moved to Edinburgh with her husband. There she obtained a DPH (with distinction) and then trained as a general practitioner. There were further moves to Sheffield, Toronto, and finally Bath. Joan had intended to become a GP, but a chance meeting between her husband and Dr Allan Dixon led to a research appointment in rheumatology, and later a clinical appointment with a special interest …
