Beyond Pakistan’s northwestern frontier lies Tajikistan. Beautiful, mountainous, and poor, it is home to hospitable people of Persian descent. In the capital, Dushanbe, are shop names in Russian and, earlier this summer, a haze of dust blown there, people said, from Afghanistan.
