Abulfatah Akram Sayeed (“Akram”) grew up in what is now Bangladesh and qualified from Dhaka Medical College in 1958. After undertaking further professional training in the United States, he joined the eye department of Leicester Royal Infirmary in 1961 to train in ophthalmic surgery. However, in 1963 he took some locum general practice work and within a matter of weeks realised that general practice was his vocation.
