The authors of this obituary have alerted us to some errors (BMJ 2008;336:394, 16 Feb, doi: 10.1136/bmj.39489.514282.BE). The names of the first two authors are in fact Anatoly [not Alexandr] Grigoriev and Michael Ugrumov [not Ugryumov]; the third author’s name was correct (Boleslav Lichterman). The correct name of Gazenko’s son is Alexander. The memorial desk to Laika (the first dog that was sent into space and died from overheating) is located at the building of the State Research Testing Institute for Air and Space Medicine (now the State Research Testing Institute for Military Medicine). Inauguration of the bronze monument to Laika (erected near this institute) is planned on Cosmonautics Day (12 April), which is celebrated in honour of the first manned space flight made by Yuri Gagarin.
