Alistair John Robertson

Born in Aberdeen in 1950, Alistair John Robertson excelled academically at Aberdeen Grammar School and proceeded to read medicine at Aberdeen University in 1969.As an undergraduate he continued to impress, and having secured prizes in anatomy in first and second year he was offered the opportunity to spend an additional year studying for a bachelor’s degree in medical biology. He seized this offer but chose to spend this extra year studying pathology. He joined a department replete with young talented doctors at a time when pathology was in transition from a descriptive discipline to a subject attempting to explain the aetiology and development of disease processes at the cellular level. This year was very well spent as it stimulated his lifelong interest in pathology. He obtained the degree of BMedBiol with honours before returning to the mainstream medical class, collecting the Russell medal in pathology and bacteriology en route to graduating MB ChB with commendation in 1975.
