While taking prospective medical students on tours of the medical school, I was asked by a 16 year old if it's possible to emerge from university debt-free. I replied with a quote by the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen: “Never stop because you are afraid … the difficult takes time; the impossible is what takes a little longer.” This applies to medical school and debt: here I present some prophylaxis.

Accommodation-Avoid extortionate rent by living in college. Shower at the gym, and sleep in the common room. If the common room or bar is too busy, the tables in the 24 hour library are unlikely to be, so use them.
