How did your medical career begin?
I am of Indian origin and was born in east Africa. I went to primary school in Uganda. My family came to the United Kingdom in the exodus of 1972 from Uganda. I went to secondary school and sixth form college in Leicester, which is still my home. My parents were keen for me to become a doctor, and that was the driving force. I believe that direction is important, as are good role models. It was in sixth form that I decided to do medicine.
