Frank Derek Thompson's background in cardiovascular and renal medicine allowed him to combine a dual career as nephrologist at the St Peter's Hospitals and the Harefield and Mount Vernon Group. In the early days, before single specialty hospitals became unfashionable, many heart and lung transplant patients who developed acute renal failure were successfully dialysed and ventilated in the basement renal unit of St Paul's Hospital in Covent Garden, together with other cardiac patients from the major London units and beyond. He was always proud of having been a “Harefield man,” although many of his colleagues at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology did not fully appreciate the immense and continuing clinical commitment that this entailed.
He had an outstanding reputation as a nephrologist and physician at St Peter's and provided academic stimulation and encouragement to medical and nursing colleagues alike, together with a major teaching input to our postgraduate activities. He was a dependable source of encouragement and good advice, particularly when times were hard, and it was no surprise that he became dean of the Institute of Urology and Nephrology between 1985 and 1998. He was largely responsible for the successful integration of the institute into the then Middlesex/UCH Medical School and for the relocation of the four individual St Peter's hospitals to the Middlesex Hospital in 1992. His contributions continued when he became vice dean in the Faculty of Clinical Science in 1990.
He was passionate about his cricket, gardening, and bird watching and his strong Christian commitment throughout his life was clear to all who knew him. Medical problems in his final years were born silently and courageously. He leaves his wife (Liz) and two children.
