Petite, red haired, fiery, and formidable, she was the first woman to be president of the British Paediatric Association, which for many years oversaw training and standards in the discipline. She helped establish the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 1996, and was rewarded by having her image incorporated into the college's coat of arms. The struggle for a separate college had taken paediatricians 50 years. The coat of arms shows Lloyd standing on the left, holding a double helix in place of a staff of Aesculapius, while the 16th century paediatrician Thomas Phaire is on the right.
