I warmly hugged and kissed her before she was taken into the anaesthetic room. Feeling a bit drowsy from the premedication, she flashed a smile, a reassuring one that comforted me. She waved goodbye to about 10 relatives who had come to wish her well. They knew she was in good hands—those of a renowned gynaeco-oncologist, who happened to be my dad's best friend from medical school.
