Graham Herbert Anderson
Former general practitioner Lancaster (b 1918; q Glasgow 1940; FRCP (Glas), FRCGP), died from a cerebrovascular accident on 4 March 2006.After qualification and house appointments at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow, Graham Anderson saw war service with the Royal Air Force Flying Training Command. With his service over he obtained his higher qualification in medicine but in 1948 moved into general practice through taking a locum post in a well established practice with Scottish origins in Lancaster. He stayed on and was a partner for 32 years and senior partner for 17. He saw that general practice could be a specialty in its own right and was a founder member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, going on to become a fellow and to receive the college’s Gold Medal in 2002. He was a trainer in general practice for many years and a clinical assistant in neurosurgery and electroencephalography (EEG).
Throughout his career and his retirement Graham supported the Lancaster Medical Book Club, which was founded in 1823. He was treasurer for 12 years and president in 1970 and was made an honorary life member in 1995. He was also a past president of the Lancaster Division of the BMA.
Graham remained very Scottish, in spite of living in England for 58 years, and he and his wife were active members of the Lancaster Caledonian Society. Away from medicine he meticulously planned the extensive travel which he and his wife enjoyed. He had been a low handicap golfer but gave up the game in his middle years but not before he had won the local doctor’s cup twice. He gave up golf to devote more time to his family, as supporting the activities of his children and grandchildren was always his priority.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two children; and two grandchildren. [John H Chippendale]
