UK government gives consultants pay award in stages

    The UK government has incurred the wrath of senior doctors by deciding to increase their pay in two stages, starting with a rise of only 1% from this month. Nurses and junior doctors will receive immediate rises of 2.5% and 2.2%.

    Consultants' salaries will not rise by the full 2.2% recommended by the Doctors' and Dentists' Pay Review Body until November this year. The overall rise for the year will work out at 1.5%.
