Clinicians in the United Kingdom have drawn up a blueprint for the future care of patients with gastrointestinal conditions.
Cancers of the gastrointestinal tract account for 21% of all cancers and 27% of cancer deaths in the UK, their report shows.
And the burden on society from gastrointestinal conditions is high. The report says that such diseases cost the NHS £1.4bn (€2bn; $2.5bn) in 2001-2 and that the total cost to the economy was £7.2bn.
