General practitioner Bishop Auckland 1947-86 (b 1921; q Durham 1944; FRCGP), died from prostate cancer on 9 October 2005.
After house jobs at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tony joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and served as a surgeon lieutenant in the Pacific fleet, visiting Hiroshima after the atomic bomb. His naval experiences stimulated a lifelong interest in ships and naval history. In 1947 he entered his father's practice and, upon his father's retirement a year later, he went into partnership with the late Donald Prescott. He was chairman of the local division of the BMA. In his retirement he became chairman of the Friends of Auckland Castle. He leaves a wife, Pamela, and two children.
