Ada Glynn
Former consultant psychiatrist Lancaster Moor Hospital (b London 1907;
q Royal Free Hospital, London, 1940; DPM 1942), d 24 March 2005.
Born to a Jewish, 19th century immigrant family, Ada Glynn benefited from
her mother’s amazed delight that education in England was free. Ada’s subsequent
degree in chemistry led to a PhD for work on the brain at Leavesden Hospital
and her eventual career in psychiatry. She married Dr Joseph Silverston,
the medical superintendent at Lancaster, on his retirement in 1956. They
moved to Winterton Hospital, Sedgefield, where Ada became deputy superintendent.
She was widowed in 1962. She was pleased to be seen as an old-style psychiatrist,
dedicated to her patients who trusted her implicitly. During a long retirement
she wrote witty topical verses, and became an accomplished watercolourist,
continuing to paint after a severe hemiplegia in 1999. [Alan Glynn, Michael
