Northern Ireland will introduce a smoking ban

    Plans by the Northern Ireland health minister, Shaun Woodward, to introduce a total ban on smoking in bars and restaurants from April 2007 have been welcomed by the BMA.

    Smoking will be banned in enclosed public places, such as this Belfast pub, from April 2007


    Brian Patterson, chairman of the BMA in Northern Ireland, said Mr Woodward had “shown courage” in making this decision. “We will give him our full support in taking it to implementation,” he said.
